MPLS

Multi Protocol Label Switching - is a technology for speeding up network traffic flow and making it easier to manage. MPLS involves setting up a specific path across a network for a given sequence of data packets; in simple terms giving an order or prioritisation to certain traffic e.g VoIP.

In addition to moving traffic faster overall, an MPLS makes it easy to manage a network for Quality of Service (QoS). For these reasons, the technique is being readily adopted as networks begin to carry more and different mixtures of traffic types.

MPLS is highly reliable due the way in which the information is carried. For example, if one link should fail the traffic is automatically rerouted to find another path.

It also offers a cost effective solution where multiple sites are connected. By their very nature of traffic being rerouted for the quickest path, they do not have a standard link however, it is possible to add even further security measures such as VPN's to offer an incredibly secure business solution without the largest of bandwidth but that is easy to increase as needs change.
